Drop recorded in Sony PS3 sales

Bad news PS3 lovers!! Sony has announced that its PS3 hardware sales dropped during their first financial quarter ended June 30th.

The PS3 sold a total of 1.8 million units during the three months in question, which is a sharp decrease of 25% from the same time last year.

However, there were reasons to celebrate as their software sales figures were also released.

Video game sales last year sat at an impressive 24.8 million and actually increased to 26.1 million in 2011.

Another sector of Sony’s PlayStation brand, the PSP, also saw an increase in purchases by some 50%. Last year the firm managed to ship 1.2 million units of the PSP, despite being released almost six years ago. But this year saw that figure jump to around 1.8 million.

The good old PS2 still manages to sell a decent amount considering, although the 1.6 million units sold last year fell by 12% to 1.4 million – whilst game sales saw a decrease of around 55% to 1.5 million.
