FIFA 12: Tactical Defending Explained

With FIFA and PES now gathering some momentum, It seems each game is trying to get a little bit more information out than the other. This as you can imagine can be exciting yet frustrating as the developers can't give away everything and need to hold back so we all have something to look forward to when we pop that brand new shiny disc in our systems. Which is why this little treat from Darren Cross explaining FIFA 12's new Tactical Defending system was enough to keep me occupied until the next wave of announcements.

Football Journalist and FIFA Gamer, Darren Cross:
http://www.ea.com/uk/news/the-backpage-tactical-defending-explained?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_content=Twitter

"Hello, and welcome back to The Backpage.

It’s been ages since we’ve spoken, but I’ve been quiet for a very good reason… I’ve spent the last few weeks and months getting to know FIFA 12 a whole lot better. Among trips to FIFA HQ in Vancouver and the UK offices in Guildford, I’ve also managed to wangle a day playing a very early version of the game.
Just don’t tell my Editor at MATCH that, he thinks I was in meetings.
By now I’m sure you’ve hoovered up all the available info on the new game, so I’m not going to go over old news by writing about the headline features that were announced last month. Instead, over the next few weeks I’ll be focusing on what these features and changes actually do to the game and the gameplay, what that means to you and – in some cases – how you can start preparing for them now. And as always I’ll aim to include a bit of real football insight if it directly relates to the game, which will prove to be the case a lot as we take a much closer look at 12.
So you’re going to notice that FIFA has changed as soon as you turn 12 on for the first time. I’m sure you’ve picked that up so far. You’ll instantly spot the new menu system – horizontal instead of vertical – and the improved presentation of the matches, which is now closer to the kind of package you’d expect to see on Sky or ESPN.
Once you’re done being quietly impressed with that, the game will kick-off and you’ll immediately see the new Player Impact Engine at work as players move about the pitch and react to what’s happening around them. It looks amazing, and some of the collisions and their effects will have you wincing… then quickly accessing the replay function for another look as you wonder just how the team at EA Canada have made this all look so real.
However, it’s not how things LOOK that will make the biggest impression on you initially, but how things FEEL. I’m talking about the new Tactical Defending feature, which is going to slap you in the face and shout ‘I’m new!’ as soon as you start working on winning the ball back for the first time.
In FIFA 11 you don’t really have to work all that hard on defence. The press and standing tackle feature take care of all that for you, tracking down the player with the ball and pressing them constantly until your team win it back. As the defender, all you are doing is holding one button to press – or two to double press – but as the attacker you feel a bit like the ball is a hot potato… something to get rid of quickly due to the heatseeking defender that is inevitably closing in on you.
Great for the defending team, but a little unbalanced and not really all that realistic.
Realism, as I’m sure you know, is something the team behind the game strives for and prides themselves on, so it’s no surprise that this system has been completely overhauled, but let me just explain what I mean when I say that the defending system in 11 isn’t as realistic as it could be…
For starters, constantly pressing with multiple players can rip a team’s shape and formation to pieces. I’m sure you’ve seen this happen in FIFA 11 and – if you’re anything like me – you’ve probably fallen into the trap of over-pressing then watched with horror as the opposition skips through a gap in your defence, which has parted like the Red Sea, due to both of your centre-backs being roughly 40,000 miles out of position.
You just don’t see that in real football (well, unless your unfortunate enough to be watching my amateur team play on a Saturday) and so you no longer see it in FIFA. Now a defender will track the path of the ball, but won’t go surging in to win it right away like he will do in 11. You now control the distance your defender stands from the attacker, and you also have control over which areas of the pitch you want to shepherd the attacker into. If he wanders into an area that would take your player out of position, you switch to a defender in a better position and begin the process again. Finally, and crucially, YOU choose the exact moment to make an attempt for the ball.
This is exactly how defending works in real football.
If you speak to any professional footballer, they will tell you that the first job of a defender is not to win the ball back, but to slow the opposition player down and direct him to areas of the pitch where he will either do no damage, face more traffic or be forced to turn back.
If, during that process, they get a chance to win the ball back then they will of course take it, but what they don’t do is go mindlessly rushing forward in search of the ball without any thought to positioning.
Neither will you in FIFA 12, and it’s this that will take the most getting used to.
I don’t mean that in a negative way though. Yes it takes time to forget the pressing system from FIFA 11 and you will spend the first few games instinctively trying to press, but once you get the hang of it – and you will – the experience is infinitely more engaging, rewarding and realistic.
Which brings me on to my final point; how you can prepare for this new system now.
The answer is simply to watch some football. As much football as you possibly can, paying particular attention to what is happening with the defending team.
Watch the body shape and positioning of the defenders and notice how they attempt to direct the attackers into disadvantageous positions. They will do things like force a player on to his weak foot by standing to the attacker’s stronger side. Wide midfielders will show attackers infield where they know they’ll have more bodies in the way to intercept and – most importantly – all defenders will stay on their feet until they’re as certain as they can be that they’ll get something on the ball if they go for the tackle.
Look out for these things, take a mental note of how they’re done and I guarantee you the transition to FIFA 12’s Tactical Defending system will be smoother.
And don’t worry that’s it’s the closed season either; there’s still plenty of live matches for you to check out. The Copa America starts on July 2 and there are more than a few players there who can teach us all a thing or two about defending. I know I’ll be watching"

Konami Confident Of PES 2012 Success

Will PES 2012 beat FIFA 12 this year? No, Probably not. With Fifa 11 shipping more than 820,000 in week one sales, To think that PES will out sell the giant this year is naive to say the least. Although are we looking at it all wrong? I mean do Konami want all of that fanbase? or just the hardcore. Well John Murphy UK PES Team Leader tells CVG what he thinks about this whole FIFA Vs PES debate and what chances PES has this year of attracting fans back to the former kings of virtual football.

Jon Murphy telling CVG:

"I really do believe that the offering we've got this year will pull some fans back from the competition. Perhaps we'll see another year when people buy both games, but after six months, we want to make sure they trade-in only one of them - and it's not ours.

"[FIFA] has the atmosphere, the crowds and certain licences we don't - and everybody knows they've got better commentary than us. I can't see that changing. And some of the stuff they're doing with the collisions looks great, depending how it works as you actually play.

"But if you want pure gameplay, I think we'll smash them this year. We've got so many things going for us, but just the lightness of touch and the way the players move independently is fantastic. You notice it instantly."
Murphy added: "We don't want everyone, it's not about that - we want the front runners, the opinion formers, the players who tell their friends 'you've got to check out PES this year'. We want to bring them back, and I think we can."

Pro Evolution 2012 Press Impressions

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 was a massive improvement from 2010.. but seeing as PES 2010 was beyond terrible, that praise is meaningless. Konami had dropped the ball and they knew it (Eventually) Which led them to re-thinking there strategy for the future of the PES series. 2011 was a huge step in the right direction. It improved every aspect of the game and brought back a few glimpses of magic that made PES so incredible. The press haven't been to kind to the series in the past few years, Some of it harsh but most deserved. Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 seems to have taken the base of 2011 and once again improved on almost everything. PES has always been close to my heart, Even through the dark days, Which is why reading these impressions from the press gets me all giddy with excitement! Can Konami bring back the King of Football Gaming? The race may be close than you think...

Official Playstation Magazine

”Elsewhere, PES 2012 was Borderline astounding for me – not in terms of overall quality, but in the sense that last year’s game was so far behind FIFA 11 in terms of on-field gameplay, and that most definitely isn’t the case any more. This is a much slicker, more immediate experience, which harks back to the halcyon days of PES’s last PS2 years: zipping balls around in tight spaces, admiring the almost human AI of players off the ball (diagonal runs across and around defenders, something FIFA still hasn’t quite nailed, are a particular joy), and introducing an intriguing set piece concept where you can control a specific player on a corner, free kick or throw in, rather than the actual kicker himself. It doesn’t play perfectly – keepers still need a bit of work (and we’ve been saying that about PES for many years) – but no game at the show surprised me more in terms of how far it has turned around since a previous iteration.”

IGN

"FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer continue to provide the world with realistic soccer action, year after year. With each set of 365 days, tweaks and changes come to the game, and players continue to step onto the field. Some years the changes are greater than others, but sometimes it's the little tweaks that are surprisingly groundbreaking. We've talked about the great additions to FIFA 12 this year, but I was pleasantly surprised to see what Konami did to their franchise"

PES2012
Your teammates will use the space.

"In Pro Evolution Soccer 2012, the differences all fall on the shoulders of AI - but it truly opens up the playing field. It's based on the idea that you're not in charge of your team - they live their own lives. So they need to react to the field like a unique specimen. If you're jogging around a real field, as much as you yell, you're still not in charge of what your teammates are doing. PES2012 implements this idea beautifully into the game.

So when the whistle blows in any match of PES2012, the computer gets to work. When you're dribbling down the field, your teammates are going to break into space (even diagonally), draw defenders off of you, and help finish the play as any trained footballer should. This leaves you the ability to concentrate on your footwork and not worry about the execution around you. In action, the difference is immediately noticeable and you can always find the open man"

The AI is open for a pass.

"On the defensive side, you're going to notice the computer taking over as well. If a striker blows past his cover, the computer will automatically jump to cover him while the rest of the team catches up. This makes scoring a more difficult undertaking – but that's exactly how it needs to be.

Konami's a few months away from announcing its licenses for teams this year, and the modes and additions are still a secret. But with some simple finesse of artificial intelligence, Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 has leapt ahead of its predecessors and feels like a fun day on the pitch"

Gamespot

"FIFA 12 wasn't the only football game on show at this year's E3 expo, with Konami unveiling a bunch of new features for Pro Evolution soccer 2012. As yearly updates go, PES 12 is looking like a big one, with improved animation, visuals, and AI updates that attempt to make it a more realistic experience. With FIFA currently taking the football crown, Konami's certainly got its work cut out to return the series to its glory days and back to the top of table"
"Of all the new features, PES 12's AI improvements are the biggest, with changes being made to almost all aspects of the game. Our first look started with active AI overlap, a new feature that's designed to improve the performance of players off the ball. In PES 11, if you passed the ball forward to an open area on the pitch, more often than not supporting players wouldn't chase the ball down. Players will now run forward to receive passes, letting you make better use of open space.
This is enhanced by improvements made to dummy runs and diagonal runs, which see players drawing out defenders to give you space to play the ball and make runs across the whole length of the pitch, rather than just along one side of it. The next new feature we were shown was zonal defense. It attempts to improve defensive lines, so players now stay in formation. We were shown a clip from PES 11, which showed defensive players in a zigzag formation outside of the box. In PES 12, that line has been straightened up to more accurately mimic real-world players.
The final AI improvement we were shown was called zonal marking, which attempts to improve the defensive play of your teammates. Players will automatically pick up on runs of attacking players, chasing them down and launching tackles. As well as AI improvements, we were shown one tweak to the controls, which allows you to control players off the ball. For example, if you've got a throw in or a free kick, you can move other players around the pitch, as well as line up your throw or shot"
"improvements are substantial, and if they work as promised, they'll go some way toward making PES 12 a more realistic experience and a better alternative to FIFA. With the game currently only 60 percent complete, there's still a lot of new features Konami has yet to implement, including new personal update data, animation improvements, and more responsive button presses. Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 is due for release in the third quarter of this year. Look out for more on GameSpot soon"

E3 2011 - My Top 5 Picks for Game of Show

We all know about the Call Of Dutys, Uncharted's and Gears Of Wars being the stars of E3 this year, But here is my top 5 pick of games which might of just flown under the radar, But could just steal the show.

5 - Rage

Bethesda sure know how to make a game. So when Rage was announced a few years back, many people were curious as to what Rage actually was. It turned out to be an action first person shooter with driving mechanics. The game is set after an asteroid hit the earth in 2038 which prompts you and other survivors to re-populate. No idea yet if there will be any baby making in the game or just shooting people in the face. Either way this game looks very interesting indeed.

4 - Journey

"An exotic adventure with a more serious tone, Journey presents TGC’s unique vision of an online adventure experience. Awakening in an unknown world, the player walks, glides, and flies through a vast and awe-inspiring landscape, while discovering the history of an ancient, mysterious civilization along the way.

Journey’s innovative approach to online play encourages players to explore this environment with strangers who cross their path from time to time. By traveling together, they can re-shape the experience – creating authentic moments they will remember and discuss with other"

Its not often that a game tries something very different form the norm. So when thatgamecompany announced Journey, It felt like a breath of fresh air, Although that gust of air could be sweeping some sand towards your face, as the developers have created a stunning looking desert in which you will roam and investigate. I personally cannot wait to see more of this.

3 - Dead Island

We all like killing Zombies.... Right? Left For Dead, Dead Rising, Blood Drive..... Okay maybe not Blood Drive, But if Techlands Dead Island is anything as good as there now infamous trailer was, Then we could have something real special on our hands. A beautiful open world holiday resort is the scene in which you will decapitate various types of flesh eating zombies, With a range of interesting fire-power and melee weapons.

Dead Zombie girl... Can't go wrong with that.

Dead Island Stunning Debut Trailer

2 - Battlefield 3

Of course Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is out this year. So should EA delay Battlefield until the COD series has gone away? No, They are not only trying to beat Call Of Duty, but they are looking to destroy it! After releasing several teaser trailers showing off there brand new Frostbite 2 engine which was simply developed for this game (Even using the animation system for Fifa) It is shaping up to be a destructive force in the Modern combat genre. Call Of Duty have a mammoth fanbase, some fans prefer Battlefield. If Battlefield 3 is anything like EA is saying it is, then a huge majority of people may well jump ship. EA will be showing off B3 multiplayer at there Press Conference so stay tuned!

1 - BioShock Infinate

My number 1 choice for game of show at E3. Irrational Games haven't released to much information about Bioshock Infinate, but its enough to show that this is shaping up to be an incredible experience. Fans of Bioshock will be truly excited that the series has taken a break form the depths of Rapture after the rather lacklustre Bioshock 2 pretty much exhausted what was so great from the first offering. Set on a collapsing air-city called Columbia in 1912, That change couldn't be further from the claustrophobic feel of the deep. The more information released on Bioshock Infinate, the more it shows that this is not just another Bioshock game. This game has a few tricks up its sleeve which will be revealed in its E3 presentation in a few days. Its my number 1 pick for a reason so make sure you do not miss it.

New Playstation Vita screens leaked

With E3 just days away, Sony are preparing to blow all of our little minds with the official presentation of the PS Vita. Judging by these screens that have been leaked, The hype could well be justified. For a hand held gaming device, The screens of Uncharted and Wipeout look absolutly stunning. The question is, Even with all the impressive tech and specs.. Is it enough to survive in the ever increasing smartphone gaming world.

Fifa 12 Player Impact Engine

EA's development of the Fifa series over the last decade has definitely had its ups and downs. Being the kings of Football gaming until Konami brought out the very successful PES series. With Fifa now back on top they could rest on there laurels, But with there latest trailer, It is clear to see that EA have no intention of just churning out the same game every year. The all new Player Impact Engine is one of those improvements that could well and truly change the Fifa series and possibly football gaming forever. Player physics have been improved so much that player collision look incredibly realistic, Which could take the fluidity of the game to a whole new level.
